Medical Product Design

Foster-Miller designs and develops custom medical devices.  We develop proprietary products from creation of the initial concept through prototype development to final design verification and transition into production.  We apply practical, state-of-the-art technology to ensure a breakthrough product.

Foster-Miller integrates design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA), as we also design and build production equipment.  Integration of our in-house resources with yours is an important component of assuring that our clients capture all project intelligence.

Core competencies include:

  • Catheter design and development.
  • Heart valve design.
  • Materials development (plastics, polymers, composites, ceramics, phase transition gels).
  • Packaging (form-fill-seal, binary packaging).
  • Dispensing and delivery systems.
  • Market and user research.
  • Industrial design.
  • Continuous injection molding.
  • Extrusion (conventional, single screw, twin screw, counter-rotating die for LCPs).
  • Automation (high speed, continuous motion, continuous process).
  • Automated handling of small, fragile and limp components.
  • Automation (flexible, lean, non-synchronous transfer).
  • Mechanisms.
  • Thermal engineering.
  • Valves, seals.
  • Fluid mechanics.

Medical Production Equipment Design and Build

Foster-Miller designs and builds custom production and process equipment to help our medical clients bring their products to market.  Our project team, in partnership with your personnel, designs equipment from initial concept through prototyping to final design and build.  We use our in-depth knowledge of the standard equipment available and customize only the necessary processes.  We select only the practical new or emerging technologies to assure a truly innovative production process.  Integration of our resources with yours is an important component of our program plan to assure that our clients capture all project intelligence.

Medical Business Services

Foster-Miller can also help you identify emerging technologies, analyze their impact on your business, and find companies holding leading-edge intellectual property you might like to acquire.  Our services focus on the key factors that must be understood when making decisions to acquire critical technology: forecasting, due diligence, and assessment and valuation:

  • Forecasting -- The impact of emerging technology on the business is identified and predicted.  Key enabling technologies that support strategic objectives are focused on and plans to bring product platforms to market are developed.
  • Due diligence -- Technology is assessed as part of the acquisition due diligence process.  The technical assets of the target company are assessed and an objective opinion regarding the valuation is provided.  We work for you to avoid hidden technical issues.
  • Assessment and valuation -- Medical companies continually assess and acquire technology through licensing agreements or outright purchase.  We provide the purchaser or licensee with an independent value assessment, including the practicality of leveraging the technology across product lines.  A valuation model based on anticipated cash flows is constructed.  Then a sensitivity analysis to identify key determinants of value is performed.  In our laboratories and through research we evaluate the technology’s ability to deliver the expected benefits.
