Foster-Miller, Inc., announced today that its LAST® Armor division has received a $10 million subcontract from Force Protection Industries, Inc., one of the world’s leading manufacturers of blast-protection vehicles, to supply add-on armor for 85 vehicles ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). The new transport vehicles will be called Mastiff Protected Patrol Vehicles (PPVs) and they will be delivered over the next six months.
“Using Foster-Miller for the design and integration efforts on the British Mastiff program was an easy choice for us,” said Damon T. Walsh, Vice President of Program Management. “We’ve been working closely with Foster-Miller for most of this year on our U.S. vehicle programs and have always enjoyed success based on Foster-Miller’s ability to innovate solutions and then deliver excellent products in a timely manner. They are already familiar with the design of our vehicles and were a natural selection in order to better ensure the success of the program because we know Foster-Miller will provide the best possible solutions to our customer’s needs.”
“We are pleased that Force Protection has once again chosen to use LAST® Armor as part of their overall vehicle protection strategy,” said Dr. William Ribich, president and CEO of Foster-Miller. “We have been supplying the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force with cockpit armor for the past several years and welcome this opportunity to expand our services to include UK ground forces.”
Foster-Miller’s Light-appliqué Armor Systems Technology (LAST® Armor) was developed in the 1990s to further protect military vehicles from hostile fire. The armor is attached with proprietary, high-strength Velcro® hook-and-loop fasteners that are five times stronger than conventional Velcro. No cutting, welding or drilling is required to install the armor.
LAST® Armor has been used on American, Canadian and French ground vehicles and is also used to reinforce plane cockpits by the Air Forces of ten nations around the world. LAST® Armor division has also recently introduced its own line of spall liners to the market. Spall liners provide additional protection from ballistic fragments such as those created by explosions of IEDs (improvised explosive devices).
