Foster-Miller, Inc., announced today that its Electronic and Electromagnetic Systems (EES) engineering group has earned SW-CMM Level 3 certification to processes as defined by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.  The Level 3 rating indicates that Foster-Miller’s software processes are defined and institutionalized across the EES organization.

An SW-CMM Level 3 rating is required for development of software on large military systems programs and provides a strong software process basis for meeting the traceability required on development efforts for Foster-Miller’s commercial medical device and pharmaceutical clients.  The EES group at Foster-Miller is currently applying its certified processes in military systems programs for the Navy, including software and hardware development for the Electromagnetic Launch System (EMALS) and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) programs where Foster-Miller is a major subcontractor to General Atomics.  These programs are key new systems for the next generation aircraft carrier, the CVN-21.

In addition to SW-CMM certification, the EES group also achieved its AS9100 certification during the fall of 2005.  The complementary nature of these two certifications will allow the group to transition to the broader CMMI certification over the next year as part of continuous efforts to improve the quality of the products and services Foster-Miller delivers to its customers.

“The SW-CMM certification is a key step in expanding our traditional research and development business to include full system implementation and delivery for both military and commercial clients,” said Dr. William Ribich, President and CEO of Foster-Miller, Inc.  “It is becoming a requirement on many major military systems contracts and provides a basis for meeting the strict requirements for commercial customers in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries.

“With our acquisition by QinetiQ in 2004, Foster-Miller has moved from being a small business technology provider to being an important part of one of the largest technology development organizations in the world,” Dr. Ribich went on to say. “Being part of a large organization has opened up the possibility of being a systems provider as an expansion of our traditional role as a technology provider. The SW-CMM certification achieved by the hard work of the EES staff is a key element of having the processes in place required by our DoD and commercial clients to be a systems provider.”
