Foster-Miller, Inc., announced today that its LAST® Armor Division has signed a $7 million contract with the U.S. Marines to provide ceramic door armor for Marine Humvees in Iraq that will increase protection from small arms fire and shell or bomb fragments.

LAST® Armor and its suppliers, Sioux Manufacturing, Fort Totten, ND, and Velcro® USA, Inc., Manchester, NH, make a unique armor appliqué system for air and ground vehicles that can be installed without cutting, welding or drilling.  The panels are attached with a proprietary, high-strength Velcro® hook-and-loop fastening system using only the tools provided in the kit.

More than $100 million worth of LAST® Armor has been sold since it was first used on Marine light armored vehicles (LAVs)  in 1991 in Operation Desert Storm.  Over the past 10 years, LAST® Armor has been used on LAVs and transport planes in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.  In addition to the United States, the armor is used by the militaries of Canada, France, Britain, New Zealand, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Japan.

“On behalf of all the employees of Foster-Miller and our partners in this project, I would like to thank the U.S. Marines for giving us this opportunity to improve the day-to-day protection of our service men and women in Iraq,” said Dr. William Ribich, president of Foster-Miller, Inc.  “They have our assurances that we will do everything necessary to deliver our armor as quickly as possible.”

“I would also like to thank the U.S. Army for sharing its most recent LAST® Armor test data with the Marines in an effort to help them choose an  add-on armoring system, and the U.S. Air Force, Reserve, and Air National Guard for also supporting this contracting effort,” Dr. Ribich said.

Foster-Miller, Inc., is an independent, privately held engineering, development and manufacturing company located in suburban Boston, MA, with additional offices in Albany, NY and Washington, DC.  The firm was founded almost 50 years ago by three graduates of MIT who believed there was a need for a company that could solve clients’ difficult technical problems through first-class analysis and design.  The company maintains a staff of more than 350 mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical, nuclear, aerospace, software and materials engineers as well as metallurgists, physicists, mathematicians, chemists, biologists and support staff working in the areas of transportation, robotics, advanced materials, custom machinery, power systems, biotechnology and aerospace.  Visit www.foster-miller.com for further details.
