NASA's human factors engineers at the Johnson Space Center rely on videotape records of astronauts during a mission in conducting their research. Analysis of this video data by scientists and engineers watching the tapes is time consuming and prone to error.
Foster-Miller is developing a software tool, based on image processing methods, to assist NASA researchers in analyzing astronaut activities during space missions. The Crew Performance Analyzer will provide a more accurate and more efficient means of evaluating the physiological effects of moving and resting in zero gravity. Human factors researchers in other areas, such as workplace activity and sports medicine, will also find this tool useful.
