Foster-Miller is designing, testing and evaluating displays for a collision warning system for transit bus operators. The display receives data from front and side sensors being developed by our team members, UC Berkley and Carnegie-Mellon University. Foster-Miller is using New York City Transit's high-fidelity training simulator to collect bus operators' driving performance with and without the aid of a collision warning system in order to evaluate the display options. Initially, a heads up display was envisioned, but this was later found to be ineffective for inner city bus drivers. Other displays and interfaces such as audible and haptic (vibratory) are now being tested. Foster-Miller is examining both objective performance measures as well as subjective preferences for the system.
