To provide a more convenient medical device for insulin-dependent people, Becton Dickinson wanted to develop a superior, lower-priced alternative to a competitor's product for its European market. Foster-Miller developed and designed the BD pen, which has competitively superior features including ease of use; delivery of an adjustable dose of insulin with a single plunge of a button; an audible operating feature for visually impaired users; and low-cost injection-molded parts to meet the disposable cost objective.
