Foster-Miller's unique skills for modular systems operating in hazardous environments have been recently applied to the development of equipment for the U.S. Army's demilitarization program for the destruction of chemical agents and munitions. Under contract to Burns and Row, Foster-Miller has designed and fabricated an automated solids feed system for a plasma waste converter (PWC) that has been designed to destroy chemical agents. The PWC system operates at temperatures from 2,000 to 30,000°F and requires specially engineered components to interface with this high temperature environment.  Materials that were fed included shredded wood, protective suits, fiberglass rocket casings and deactivated carbon. The system includes a loading conveyor, ram feeder, thermally protected feed gate, hydraulic power unit, and controls station. The conveyor delivers waste to the ram, which automatically feeds the operating PWC. As part of the project, Foster-Miller provided operations and maintenance manuals, training curricula, operator training, field engineering support, and spare parts.
