As part of a team led by General Atomics, Foster-Miller was awarded a contract to build a large linear motor demonstration system for Navy aircraft arresting applications. This Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD) program has culminated in the construction and testing of a one-half scale induction motor similar to what would be used in pairs for an advanced aircraft arresting system.
We designed, built, and delivered a control system for the ATD motor, and that system has successfully controlled the motor during high-speed testing. In addition to the controller design and manufacture, we were involved in other aspects of the Advanced Linear Motor (ALM) program. We developed a system-level simulation of the ATD demonstrator which has been employed extensively to model performance of the system under a wide variety of operating conditions. We also played a significant role in the ATD motor's analysis and design by producing closed-form analytical models of the linear motor.
