Based on Foster-Miller's experience in developing modular systems for hazardous environments we are designing and building equipment for the U.S. Army's demilitarization program for the destruction of chemical agents and munitions. Complete removal of the solid and polymerized "heel" in Ton Containers (TC) of mustard chemical agent is critical to cleaning the TC. In support of government testing for removal of this heel, Foster-Miller designed and fabricated high pressure water jet equipment that was used for the initial proof-of-concept decontamination testing at an Army test facility. In addition to the system itself, Foster-Miller provided operations and maintenance manuals, and operator training. The agent removal demonstration, conducted on a mustard TC in 1996, proved that water jets at high temperature and pressure could effectively remove residual agent and decontaminate the TC.
