The US Army needs to equip soldiers with enhanced decision-making capability through rapid transfer of information to each member of the squad. The means to distribute information is available, but the interconnection of equipment on each soldier is not. For example, if a chemical weapon sensor on the soldier could be connected to the radio on the soldier, it could relay a signal to other squad members to don protective clothing, thereby enhancing unit survivability. Crucial networking technology is missing from the system.

The objective of this program was to design and produce a connector that would allow data and power to be transmitted across the dismounted soldier's uniform. The connector we developed is a modification of a mil-spec buckle that allows gaps in the uniform to be bridged. A key aspect of Foster-Miller's approach was to assure that the connector and its integration into the network were designed to assure that the soldier's ability to fight and perform normal operational tasks was not degraded in any way.

Foster-Miller studied the Army connector requirements and modifications that would be required to off-the shelf products, generated design options, and ultimately delivered a test prototype buckle connector that was unobtrusive while providing the required electrical connectivity. The Army has since engaged Foster-Miller to deliver a working connector to a specific future uniform system.
