Foster-Miller developed a fabrication system for Signode to produce Geogrid, which consists of a web of oriented polyester strips on 6-in. centers. The product is used to stabilize earth slopes and keep soil in place.
In this process, some 24 plastic strips are unwound from reels spaced 6 in. apart and indexed 6 in. After each index, a separate plastic strip shoots across the 24 strips. At each of the 24 intersections, the cross strip is vibration welded to the 24 parallel strips. After welding, the array is indexed another 6 in., and the cycle repeats itself, forming a continuous 12-ft wide plastic grid. In this program, Foster-Miller worked closely with the supplier to develop the large, custom-made vibration weld system. The welder was incorporated in an overall system designed and built by Foster-Miller.
