Foster-Miller has designed and installed a state-of -the-art transformer case manipulator system that is capable of manipulating transformers up to 1000 kVA, providing six-degrees of freedom positioning to allow faster, safer and more effective maintenance on large transformers weighting up to 6,100 lb. The system as been installed in the Consolidated Edison of New York Astoria Transformer Maintenance Shop in New York and has been in use since 1991. The system, which is referred to as the Automated Network Transformer Repair Station (ANETS), replaces the old dangerous and difficult method of transfer handling using a 30-ton overhead crane. The ANETS is hydraulically powered and electrically controlled with many built-in safety features to protect the operators and maintenance personnel involved in the transformer maintenance operations.
