Handheld Chemical Threat Monitor

Foster-Miller, under contract to the U.S. Army, has demonstrated the feasibility of a low-cost, compact infrared Handheld Chemical Threat Monitor (HTCM) that can rapidly assess the presence of hazardous chemicals whether in airborne vapor or liquid phase on surfaces. This instrument combines our patented optical waveguide technology with our pioneering experience in the development of novel infrared fiber optic probes. During this program, we designed and fabricated a spectrometer to interface with our probes and verified that this device could accurately measure IR signals as compared to traditional devices.

Current Status

HCTM is a working prototype. Commercializing this device will require the implementation of pre-concentration coatings for some sampling probes, design for manufacture, and rigorous field testing. Some of these activities are being funded by the US Army RDECOM and by Foster-Miller.  Foster-Miller is currently looking to qualify this device for use in specific DoD and Homeland Security applications.
