FERRET

FERRET is a tracked mobile robot that is used for surveillance and materials handling. It has been used by the Department of Defense and by police departments for bomb removal and other hazardous duties. FERRET is operated remotely by a simple joy-stick from a distance of up to one-half mile away via a cable or radio link and it has onboard video cameras. The 480 lb robot can climb stairs, negotiate corners, travel at speeds of 1.5 mph, and can open locked doors using a specially designed end effector. Other interchangeable end effectors include a fixed 27 in. grabber, a 16 in. grabber with full wrist action, an elastomeric mounted 4 in. grabber and a shotgun. FERRET's telescoping boom allows it to inspect and remove objects from locations that may be difficult or dangerous to access in person. Foster-Miller has sold units to a range of clients including the Air Force for use at bases in Europe and to police departments across the United States.
