The CAPTURE filter panels offered by Foster-Miller are designed for passive protection of occupants from attack by an internal release of a chemical or biological warfare agent (CWA or BWA) in a building. The CAPTURE panel can be integrated into the ceiling of each protected room. Return airflow from the room will be directed through the panels at all times. If an agent is released in the room, the CAPTURE panels filter out the agent from the return air at the point of release, preventing its spread throughout a building via the HVAC system. Foster-Miller is testing 25 panels to verify this building protection system as part of DARPA's Immune Building Program.
The CAPTURE panel is a combination of highly efficient particle and activated carbon filters that traps CWA and BWA aerosols and prevents toxic chemical vapors and gases from spreading. The CAPTURE panel is equipped with its own blower to help direct return airflow through it and also provide air pressurization of the plenum, which prevents agent from leaking through openings in the ceiling. The CAPTURE also comes with replaceable pre-filters that remove dust from the air and prevent clogging of the main filters. The activated carbon filter is also treated with a hydrophobic coating that can extend the service life of the carbon to as much as three years.
