As part of a team led by General Atomics of San Diego, Foster-Miller is developing a magnetic levitation (Maglev) system as an upgrade of the test track operated by the 846th Test Squadron at Holloman AFB.
The goal of the program is to achieve Mach 9 ground test capability. The design uses superconducting magnets attached to the rocket-powered sleds that interact with passive guideway coils for levitation and guidance. The completed Maglev system will include a capability for electromagnetic braking. Other team members include Boeing, which is aiding in rocket sled design and construction, and Bechtel, which is aiding in guideway design and construction.
Our role on the team consists primarily of magnetics analysis and design.
